doctor schmoctor

Last Thursday Chris got off work early and so he came home and went to work around here (as he usually does). He's been building a new shed, which is quite impressive. I've been taking pictures, but as you regulars know, alas, cannot load them here for awhile. Just know that it's nice, concrete foundation, solid wood frame, all steel sides and roof, and one huge window... he went all out. We're using our tax refund money for this so that he can get his stuff out of our garage turned workshop, so that he can finish out the garage into two rooms and an extra bathroom... eventually.

Anyways, he was out there working, did something, slipped and his forearm came down on a corner piece of metal. He then had a nice-sized hole/puncture wound in his arm, which was just gushing pouring blood (thank You Lord that he didn't hit an artery!). I was inside with the kids, had just gotten baby S down for a nap literally minutes before (good timing) when he came rushing inside, holding his arm, with blood dripping down it. He immediately started snapping orders, "Beth, I need you... NOW! Get me some dental floss... I need a needle... "

Oh, no, I thought... *gulp* I knew where this was going. You see, about six years ago, he'd busted his knee open loading a moving truck and ended up sitting in the tub, sewing it up himself! I immediately started freaking out counseling him to let me take him downtown to the Urgent Care walk-in clinic. Why did I even fight him on it? I dunno, you'd think that I know this stubborn man well enough by now to know better. By now he had ice and a rag on his wound, and I was gathering supplies for the inevitable, even as I pleaded with him to let me take him... the gash was in his right arm, and therefore he was asking me to do the sewing this time.

Have you ever tried to sew up skin, with a regular sewing needle? Me neither, but I've seen it done... skin is tough, and stretches, and resists, it's not like cotton cloth atall.*sighs* As usual, he won. I relented right before he would have started getting really mad, when I saw that he absolutely wasn't going anywhere and would have sat there doing it by himself if I didn't help him. Yes, he would have. And so I began sterilizing our assemblage of supplies as he leaned over the kitchen sink, pouring iodine into his cut. I was thinking out loud...

Wouldn't it be good to get a tetanus shot?

He shot back, The metal is clean, brand new, don't need one.

Well, what about an antibiotic, in case of infection?

There won't be any infection if we keep it clean...

I know this... so, why am I worrying so? I thought, Must be the blood... Finally, I conceded, completely this time, sat down on the stool in front of him, and began to try and sew up my man's arm.

Well... I was shaking a bit, not out of nervousness, but because the needle just would not go through, which apparently made Chris pretty nervous though. He then had me hand the needle (threaded with waxed dental floss- just in case you were wondering- and held by pliers, to push and pull it with) over to him and he proceeded to sew up his right arm, left-handed, which must have been hard because he's right-handed! I was just relieved to not be doing it, and content to hold the cut together for him. It certainly must have been very helpful in making it easier for him... you think, maybe? I had to kinda roll the skin so that he could get the needle through more easily. Well, he said that it helped anyways. I noticed that he, too, was shaking as he sewed, which he said was from the strain of pushing that needle through (though I waited until later, when we were done to point that out).

Between gritting his teeth, and a couple of "aaarghs!" (it wasn't very numb), Chris was commenting on how we really do need to get us some real surgeon's sewing needles and assemble a good better first aid kit. I commented that if it's ever the kids or I that need sewing, it's to the doc we're going! LOL We counted down the final stitches, only one more to go!

He reminded me that once upon a time, before there was a doctor down every street, what do I think people did? And with the way things are going in this world, we may not always have such easy access to doctors... we need to learn to be more self-sufficient in the things that we can be... at least.

Yeah, okay, he's right... We'll assemble a nice, ready-for-anything first aid kit... but I sure do hope that we won't need it, and as long as he's able, he's taking me to the doctor to get any stitches that I may need, along with some local anasthetic.

All said and done though, I am impressed! By the time we were finishing up and he was in the shower, we would have just been sitting down in the waiting room of a walk-in clinic. It was red and swollen for the first day. However, now, four days later, it's healing up quite nicely, barely even red. Of course, Chris feels most triumphant in that he saved us a couple hundred bucks... What a man will do when he's got nerve, and doesn't have insurance to pay his bills, huh? What a tough guy I have, and what stories for his kids to tell. So, am I a model help-mate, or what?! LOL Seriously though, Chris is my hero... frustratingly stubborn as he is sometimes.Technorati Tags: , , ,

I thought it was cute… at first…

Published by Beth under Baby, Hilariosity, Everyday Stuff, Children

until last night.

Last week I taught baby S to throw her own diapers away. She was on board, thought it was great fun! I bragged to Chris, "See her doing her first 'chore'! She's such a big girl!" as she marched from our bedroom, down the hallway and into the kitchen with her diaper in hand, excited to "throw away the diaper"... Then, last night, N caught her red-handed. She had lifted the lid on the trash can (hey, I didn't teach her that part... not on purpose anyways, but apparently she was watching) and was about to throw the tv remote control away! LOL Yeah, so, not so cute anymore... Do you think she's trying to tell us something (besides check the trash before we take it out?)?

dumpster divin’

Yes, we do it! Well... sort of. Chris always has his eyes peeled for treasures on the sides of roads, "trash" left by unwary people, for the taking. Over the years, we've accrued some really good stuff, for nothin'. There's been a parade of worthy finds, most of which I can't even think of off the top of my head right now. But just last week, I'd have to say that Chris found his most worthy treasure yet! It even tops the deck clock from a WWII Navy ship that he'd found in a pile of junk at an abandoned house across the street from us a couple of years ago (the home was re-poed and the owners left the state quickly, after telling us that we could take whatever we wanted from what they'd left- before the bank repossessed- we actually got alot of stuff from that), and then turned around and sold the antiquated (but apparently collectable) clock on ebay for $162. My scoffing doubtfulness was subdued. :)

But yes, back to his latest find! This morning the ebay auctions closed on the Bose speakers that Chris found in a garbage pile on the side of the road last week. Would you believe that they sold for a total of *drumroll please* $426?!!! Yeah, for real!

*note* He did test the speakers before he sold them, to make sure that they work, and posted pics as well.*

So, Yeah! He's made me a bonefied believer... Though I think that I'll leave the actual diving up to him, I do make a great cheer-leader!

"Go Chris! Go Chris!!"

The kids are pretty impressed too. And that's not even mentioning what he kept: the Pioneer audio/video receiver. Any takers?

Okay, these guys made me laugh out loud!!

Published by Beth under Hilariosity, Bloggish

...numerous times over! I needed a good laugh too.

Ok Go here and here to see what I mean... I mean how long did they practice that anyways?! LOL They remind me of like a cross between Napoleon Dynamite and Men at Work, or Talking Heads... two of my old favorites. Kinda weird they all are, funny and peculiarly fascinating too. And you may ask yourself "what are they thinking?! and you may ask yourself why are they doing that?! ...and you may ask yourself, how do I work this? and you may ask youself, where does that highway go to?!" as you laugh out loud, and get your own groove on..."and you may say to yourself, this is not my groove, and you may say to yourself, these are not my beautiful moves! and you may say to yourself, Self. How did I get here?!"

Groovy... *snicker*snort*

nod & a grin to Kat for the Ok Go link, and to Tonia for the ND link (which is cool to have found because it's like the only part of the movie that made me laugh hysterically...well, almost! Now Chris, that's another story, he loves the whole rediculously silly thing!)

the dog ate his homework

Published by Beth under Hilariosity, Everyday Stuff

Well, not his homework, but N's homework. Yes, he really did...

And he liked it, alot... growled for the first time at me EVER when I tried to take it from him.

And so, "dog whisperer" that I am... I backed off and said in a real happy voice (like I wasn't worried about the book anymore), "Samson, c'mon boy!" from about 8' away from him. He came cowering over, wagging his tail and laying on the ground at my feet... expecting fully to be reprimanded for growling... He'd just lost himself in the chewing frenzy apparently.

He was under our big 'ol coffee table in the LR, and had been for awhile, apparently.

It really was our fault for not replacing his last chew toy soon enough, but worry not, he has a replacement now.

He doesn't look guilty, but he is... very.

He's here at my side now, just licked my elbow.

How could I stay mad?

It really was our fault... favorite chew toy gone, book on floor (with nice, chewey texture)... no one looking...

So, will the library understand? *sheepish grin*

something to amuse you…

Published by Beth under Hilariosity, Everyday Stuff, Bloggish

Well, it's amused me and everyone else that I've mentiond it to so far... Um... guess who emailed me... Give up? (or maybe you received the offer too?) The producer of.... "Wife Swap" had apparently visited my blog here, and invited me to contact her about doing their third season show. I kid you not. But, um... no, NOT gonna happen! LOL I politely declined her offer, for various reasons.

Here's the story of a nice, quiet homeschool mom that actually went through with it. She is much braver than I. But really, the whole affair is so sensationalized and such a *show*, that I just wouldn't want to subject my kids to all the hype and tv crews for two weeks (not to mention being away from them, and not even able to talk to them!) and then who knows WHO getting to run my/our household for a week... like I said, NOT gonna happen!

excerpt:
While ABC filmed her being picked up by a limo in front of her house, the limo actually drove off less than a mile before returning her home. This is what was shown on T.V. However, she was actually taken to the Nashville Airport in a Honda.

How cheap is that anyways? It just goes to show what a complete edit job they do on the whole experience! It's not really reality tv, not really.

But, lemme just say that they do lure you with alot of $k's... but still... not worth it to me. For one, it'd take a really good cause to get me on national (international?) t.v. For two... well, I could go on, but I won't.

It's funny though, huh?

Really, could you see me on t.v.? ;) Nope, me either. Sheesh, I could barely keep my knees from buckling in my Speech 101 class in college.

I must admit though... that for a wee moment I considered, "hmmmm... we are pretty broke, and we are in the middle of remodeling this old house, with plenty of projects left to do... soooooo since I am the officially designated painter, I could just write out a list of all the doors, molding and trim this lady in my house had to get painted in a week!" *hah!*

But, then I came back to earth... and thought of my kids... spending time alone with who knows who, and abc camera crews... and Chris blowing his top when psycho woman told him how to do things, etc., etcetera. Just kidding, jk!! ;) Did I mention that it's not gonna happen!

So... would you, swap?
A friend of mine (who also said that she wouldn't do it either) did suggest in jest that we could have lots of fun with it though... Anyways, it's been an amusing joke to us the past couple of days, as you can imagine.

But who needs abc to become famous anways?! I just noticed the other day that I've evolved from a flappy bird to a large mammal in the ttlb ecosystem, like overnight! That's about as much publicity as I can handle I think! And I promise, I won't let it go to my warm-blooded head.

sincerely,

the wife who wouldn't swap

the Meatrix

My recent post, and the comments left concerning coorperate organic growers and the woes of factory farming, reminded me of this flash show I posted many months ago at my old blog. I thought that I'd share it here for those of you who haven't seen it yet. It's a comical presentation, but sadly all too true as well. Check it out: the Meatrix and the Meatrix 2: Revolting

This is TOO funny!!

See, told ya it's a riot, huh?! ROFLOL still! So, I guess that if you come back around to that point of not caring (about all of the *ideals*) then you must be a comfortably secure in your skin veteran homeschooler, or you've quit that group, or maybe have even become an uschooler?, or how about just a "relaxed eclectic"? hehehehe

nod & a grin to Victoria
