Beth....I am reading this from LOL...I really appreciate this post. I have four boys, the oldest is 11. I can't tell you how much I have struggled with this issue. It seems so much more easy for our hubby's to make decisions in this area. I want my boys to be men, and be able to fight (in a physical and nonphysical) way. I don't want to raise them to be "pansys", but so often when they are engaging in their play fighting/guns etc...I often fear that they are getting carried away, or thinking too graphically (like pretending to chop
off someone's head). Although, I realize that many of these graphic ideas they get from bible stories, as we have studied the Bible with them. So...as a mom, I go back and forth. But, your post has given me a perspective I hadn't thought about. I also know the hearts of my boys, and although sometimes I fear they are obsessed with violence, I also know how much caring and compassion they have, and that they want to serve the Lord! Thank you for these thoughts! We are also believers in the right to bear arms, and I would have no problem with my boys hunting, being police officers, army etc...(other than being a momma who doesn't want to lose my babies :-)). So, thanks again, and God Bless! You have helped me to solidify my own thoughts on this. In Him,
Elizabeth :-)

Hi Molly,
Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Arielle,
:-)

Sebastian,
Hi, and thank you for your comment! Yes, it is an adventure! Amen to raising young men, and hopefully preparing them to tackle their own destinies one day as husbands and father, and ultimately as ministers of the Gospel.

What a nice long, chewy post. Raising sons is quite an adventure. It can be especially challenging when a mom realizes that her job isn't to raise up a son just like her, but to raise a future man who can be a partner to a future woman. That is an intimidating day.

I seem to recall that mom would not let us have toy guns as children, so we used sticks from the back yard and had everything from hand guns to bazookas in our gun battles.

With that memory in mind, I've never forbidden my boys from having toy weapons, though I really do need to put more time into teaching them how to respect the real versions!

Hi Tina!
Yes, I remember! It's so good to hear from you again. :-) Wow, we won't be far from eachother then. I have another dear friend that I'll be visiting who's also from Atlanta area, though we may meet half-way! Thank you so much for lifting us up in prayer, I so need that and appreciate it! Prayer changes things. And thank you for keeping up with my blog. I'm glad to know that you're around and honored to have you as a regular reader!

Dianne,
Hi, thanks so much! I pray (daily?) that the Lord would give me (His) balanced perspective in all things (if only, right?!)... We are works in progress, always.

Very thoughtful post, Beth. You made some good points. I have changed my stance on this issue as well with regards to my 11 year old son. I refused to let him have toy guns, but he would pick up Lego blocks and try to "shoot" with them!

Love this line: "...letting go enough that he may grow into a strong, vigilant young man, at the pace his Creator intended him to."

We've communicated via email in the past. I've changed blogs since then (I change blogs with the seasons, it seems!). I live in Georgia and was interested to read things are on track for your family to move to Chattanooga. I'll keep you in my prayers as you make the change. We're about an hour and a half south of Chattanooga in the Atlanta area.

I'm familiar with the area you live in now, as we travel through there several times a year on our way to visit family in WV. I know you'll miss it, but also know you can make a home for your family wherever the Lord takes you!

Thanks for keeping up with the blog, as time allows. I've always enjoyed reading it!
